Frequently Asked Questions
To help you have the best experience possible, we would like to discuss some questions that international travelers often have when they plan to rent a vehicle. There are often questions about driver licenses, insurance, and credit card use.
Here are some key frequently asked questions (FAQs) for international travelers seeking exotic car rentals in the United States:
Any special driver license requirements in the U.S.?
First of all, you must have a valid driver license to rent a car in the United States. Fortunately, you can use your own driver license from your country of origin. It is not necessary to obtain a local driver license or an international driving permit.
What should I do about auto insurance?
Just as is the case with your own vehicle, you are liable if you are responsible for injuring someone while operating a rental car. You are also liable for property damage, i.e., damage to the other vehicle and additional property.
At a minimum, an international visitor to the U.S. needs third-party liability insurance coverage. There are three options for obtaining such coverage:
- Purchase with rental - For many of those renting luxury vehicles on CarHopper, the easiest method is to simply add an appropriate level of insurance coverage as you complete your reservation.
- Credit card providers - In many instances, major credit card providers like American Express and MasterCard will automatically provide liability coverage as a perk of having their credit card. However, it is important to confirm that you are comfortable with the amount of coverage provided.
- Third-party websites - There are also a variety of companies who specialize in providing the appropriate liability insurance to those who intend to rent vehicles on international trips.
The purchase of collision damage waiver (CDW) insurance is optional. It is also called loss damage waiver (LDW). When you have CDW coverage, you are not responsible for damage to the rental vehicle, less a possible deductible. You’ll find that some CDW plans have no deductibles at all.
It is important to note that CDW coverage may overlap with other insurance automatically included with your credit card, so avoid double coverage by doing a little research before you leave for the United States. When you use a third-party collision damage insurance provider, such a service will reimburse you for covered charges which first appear on your credit card statement.
What about using credit cards for deposits and payments?
For the protection of their customers, banks and financial institutions carefully monitor credit card use that differs from past spending patterns. Therefore, it is possible that a foreign transaction could be declined. The solution is simple - prior to departure, authorize your bank to accept international transactions to avoid having a transaction declined for security reasons. Since you intend to rent a luxury, high-performance or exotic car, inform them about the higher amounts which will be a part of your trip.
Finally, when you pick up your rental vehicle, our local partner will pre-authorize your credit card for a security deposit equal to your insurance deductible.
